DESCRIPTION:It’s 2026\, but a third of the world’s countries still crimin
 alise consensual same-sex relationships. Many of these laws are a direct
  legacy of colonialism and empire building\, reinforced by modern global
  anti-rights movements.\n\nYet against this backdrop of discrimination\,
  persecution and violence\, strong LGBTQI+ communities have been created
 \, sharing joy\, hope and support. Brave campaigners are stepping up to 
 challenge discriminatory laws\, using the very legal systems that have b
 een used to criminalise and silence them to fight for justice for their 
 community.\n\nThe speakers have both worked within the global LGBTQI+ ri
 ghts movement and been inspired by the persistence and courage of campai
 gners and community leaders in the Global South. Join them to learn abou
 t the systematic way that Britain exported and entrenched homophobia int
 o the countries it colonised\, how unholy alliances of religious extremi
 sts and authoritarian leaders continue to stoke fear and hatred\, and th
 eir experience of how\, across the world\, LGBTQI+ people and their alli
 es are uniting to fight back.\n\nThis seminar is part of the University'
 s Hive of Pride programme of events. It will be followed by the screenin
 g of 'Out Laws'\, a newly-released documentary which uncovers the roots 
 of queer criminalisation and follows the global movement reclaiming hist
 ory through courage\, community and resistance. Attendees are encouraged
