DESCRIPTION:A two-day foundation course delivered by the Royal Statistica
 l Society in partnership with methods@manchester\n\nCourse Outline\n\nTh
e purpose of this course is to help participants understand some basic s
tatistical concepts and develop a strategy for approaching simple data a
nalysis. The course will introduce basic concepts such as hypothesis and
confidence interval estimation. It will provide the tools to undertake
simple analysis of a data set and will include some helpful hints and ti
ps for reading and understanding reported statistics.\n\nLearning Outcom
es\n\nBy the end of the course\, participants will understand basic appr
oaches to statistical inference. They will be equipped with the skills n
ecessary to undertake simple analyses and to understand some of the basi
c terms often used to report statistical results. The course will mainly
use calculations by hand to aid understanding\, but will include Excel
for some statistical results.\nTopics Covered\n\nDay 1: The normal distr
 ibution\, basic study design\, data summary\, confidence intervals\, int
roduction to hypothesis tests\, analysis of contingency tables -- the ch
 i-squared test.\n\nDay 2: T-tests\, non-parametric tests\, (Wilcoxon sig
 ned rank test\, Mann-Whitney U test)\, correlation and regression\, basi
c presentation of data and results.\nTarget Audience\n\nThis course is a
imed at those who have either never undertaken a formal statistics cours
e\, or those who have studied some statistics in the past but wish to un
dertake a refresher. It is ideal for statistical novices who have never
had any formal training but are starting to encounter statistics in thei
r work and wish to gain some insight.\nAssumed Knowledge\n\nNo prior kno
 wledge is assumed.\n\n\nFees \n\nRegistration before\n12 August 2019\
