This symposium will present current research from Manchester, the UK and Europe into using 3D breast imaging, image processing, risk estimation and computer-aided diagnosis to improve the detection, prediction and prevention of breast cancer.
Abstract:
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, with a 1 in 8 lifetime risk of diagnosis for women. Imaging allows the early detection of breast cancer, before any changes in breast tissue can be felt by either patient or clinician. The NHS Breast Screening Programme has been using X-ray mammography to screen women for breast cancer since 1988, with 1.88 million women screened and 14,725 cancers detected in England in 2010-11.
Programme:
1.00pm – Introduction – Dr Jamie Sergeant, University of Manchester
1.05pm – MRI to X-ray mammography, Prof David Hawkes, UCL
1.35pm – Breast density: applications in personalised screening and treatment, Dr Sue Astley, University of Manchester
2.05pm – Coffee break
2.35pm – Tomosynthesis: Is 3D better?, Dr Yit Yoong Lim, University of Manchester
3.05pm – Novel CAD applicatiosn in screening, Prof Nico Karssemeijer Radbound, University Nijmegen
3.35pm – Final discussion, Dr Jamie Sergeant, University of Manchester
