This seminar is presented by Viji Kuppan, PhD Student at Leeds Beckett University in the Centre for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. He will draw from previous writing presented in the book The Fire Now (Johnson et al, 2018), called, Crippin’ Blackness: Narratives of Disabled People of Colour from Slavery to Trump. Together with a forthcoming piece, entitled, Black Crip Killjoys: Dissident Voices and Neglected Stories from the Margins, to speak to entangled racialized, disabled and gendered alterity in neoliberal times.
He will scrutinize social and cultural life in its spectacular (including spectacularly violent), and many mundane forms to deepen understanding of the multiple and simultaneous oppression that disabled people of colour are regularly subjected to. In so doing he situates the often silenced and erased Black and Brown Crip body as experiencing debility (Puar, 2017) before and rather than (if ever) it is acknowledged as being disabled.
