DESCRIPTION:Join us for our next Computer Science Mercury Talk with speak
er Deema Alqathani in Kilburn L.T 1.5\n\n\nMany self-trackers lose inter
est in tracking\, disengage and ultimately they even withdraw from track
ing. Lack of motivation\, difficulty in attaining everyday goals and unm
et expectations are some of the reasons why this happens. To help bridge
the gap between expectations and reality in self-tracking we developed
FitReflect\, an app that helps users moderate their daily goals by repor
ting their confidence in achieving them. We conducted a 4-week field exp
eriment where we collected the activity of fourteen Fitbit users. We fin
d that\, compared to the non-moderated goal condition\, participants wit
h moderated goals not only got closer to their actual goals and adjusted
their goals more frequently\, but also were more satisfied with their p
hysical activity. Further findings indicate that goal moderation increas
es motivation and commitment\, and reduces disappointment.
