The demand for healthcare is rising all the time for many reasons, and mostly outstrips supply. This means hard choices have to be made about how to distribute resources in health care. One response is to treat patients on a first-come first-served basis until the money runs out. This may not be the best way to make sure limited, or scarce, health care resources are used to gain the most benefit for society. Economic evaluation provides an approach to allocate resources to improve the efficiency of health systems, in a way that gives the most benefit for the population. This short course gives an overview of basic concepts and why economic evaluation is needed as well as the key approaches and methods used.
