Antibiotic drug resistance is responsible for more than tens of thousands of deaths around the world, and accepted by the United Nations and WHO as one of the biggest threats to human life.

So what needs to be done?

International, national and local strategies are being implemented in different ways in different parts of the world. Much attention is given to the availability of antibiotic drugs and how this might be changed to reduce the scale of antibiotic drug resistance. But why aren’t these drugs, with serious consequences to human, animal and environmental health, subject to the same rigours as opiates for example? Come and listen to the debate as two sides battle it out.

'This House believes more stringent regulations around the use of antibiotics are needed, in line with those surrounding controlled medications'

Manchester Medical Debating Society have taken on this challenge put to them by the University’s Flagship 'Action on Antibiotic Drug Resistance: One student, one campus, one world'.

Free and open to all.
