DESCRIPTION:This talk is concerned with the topology of the orbit space o
f the action of a maximal compact torus on the complex Grassmannian G(2\
,5). More precisely\, I will discuss how to calculate the integral homol
ogy groups of this topological space. This will take us on a tour from
the classical birational geometry of the del Pezzo surface of degree 5
to the more recent theme of Variation of Geometric Invariant Theory whic
h in turn\, by the Kempf-Ness Theorem\, links to the topology of the or
bits space of the compact torus action.
