DESCRIPTION:Abundant research shows that poverty\, financial hardship\, u
 nemployment\, income inequalities and other economic factors increase th
 e risk for suicide. Nevertheless\, the field of suicide prevention has n
 ot integrated strategies to address these economic determinants. \n\n\nH
 osted by Professor of Psychiatry Nusrat Husain\, guest speaker Oscar Jim
 énez-Solomon will give a presentation on the overview of recent evidence
  about the effect of social policies - such as tax credits\, unemploymen
 t benefits\, minimum wage\, food assistance\, and housing supports – on 
 suicide risk\, and make a case for the need to expand suicide prevention
  by integrating economic empowerment strategies at the micro\, meso\, an
 d macro levels. \n\n\nThe presentation will also share preliminary lesso
 ns from a peer-led financial empowerment intervention to reduce suicidal
  ideation\, and a new initiative in New York State to provide mental hea
 lth counselling and suicide safety planning in tandem with supports to n
 avigate financial counselling and free tax preparation assistance.\n\n\n
