DESCRIPTION:Not All Cohorts Are Born Equal: Evidence from the Educational
  Outcome of the "Children of the Wall"\n\nAbstract: After the fall of th
 e Berlin Wall\, East Germany experienced an unprecedented temporary drop
  in fertility mostly driven by economic uncertainty. We investigate whet
 her children born during this nativity slump were positively or negative
 ly selected. Using various educational measures\, we show that from an e
 arly age these children perform worse. Consistent with negative selectio
 n\, mothers who gave birth in that period had worse observed personal ch
 aracteristics. These children are also less likely to be growing up with
  natural parents or stable relationships. Finally\, investigating the un
 derlying mechanisms reveals that parental educational input and emotiona
 l attachment play were also lower for these children. Finally\, results 
 for siblings support the negative parental selection rather than a time
