DESCRIPTION:CCCJ Seminar Programme 2017/18 \n(in collaboration with Metho
ds@Manchester)\n\nCrowdsourcing involves harnessing the information and
skills of large crowds of people into \none collaborative project. Advan
cements in technologies allow for larger scale participation \nthan prev
iously possible\, resulting in larger volumes of data that can facilitat
 e more fine-grained analysis. \nFor example\, in Germany\, in 2012\, sci
entists collaborated with 5000 people to capture over 17\,000 samples of
mosquito\, \nresulting in the discovery of an invasive species with imp
lications for public health. Such crowdsourced data can highlight \nnew
information for social science researchers\, and by considering the mode
of production of much of this data\, \nit becomes possible to examine t
he experiences and perceptions of the people generating it. \n
