Expanding the Ethnographic Subject: Labs, Gardens, and Horses
John Hartigan reports on his recent fieldwork on races of corn in Mexico and botanical gardens in Spain. This project entailed shifting from an “ethnography of the lab” approach to one that attempts to “follow the species” through a range of settings. Hartigan argues for using ethnography as a means of tapping scientific expertise in order to account for non human subjects. Eventually, this led to his current fieldwork on wild horses in the north western corner of the Iberian Peninsula.
