 overies. It begins within the fine neo-gothic architecture of the Univer
 sity’s Old Quadrangle and tells the story of Owens College\, which would
  become England’s first civic university.\n\nFounded from the philanthro
 py of wealthy Manchester merchants\, Owens College captured the energy a
 nd spirit of the industrial revolution. Its successor\, the Victoria Uni
 versity of Manchester\, helped establish the style of the modern univers
 ity with its secularist approach and pursuit of research alongside teach
 ing.\n\nThe tour traces the development of the University into the twent
 ieth century and visits key sites of discovery including where Ernest Ru
 therford first split the atom and where Alan Turing helped lay the found
