DESCRIPTION:The next seminar in the ‘Celebrating Research Success in the
Faculty of Life Sciences (FLS)’ series will be given by two members of t
he Sensory & Computational Neuroscience (SCoNe) Research Theme: Prof Rob
Lucas and Dr Tim Brown. \n\nRob’s presentation will be entitled ‘Light
adaptation in the face of light adaptation’. Abstract: As the world gets
brighter\, the neural circuits we use for vision change to take maximal
advantage of the altered environment. In this study we asked how the vi
sual system measures background light intensity in order to produce thes
e changes. We show that this process relies upon an independent photorec
eptor mechanism in the eye.\n\nTim’s presentation will be entitled ‘Rhyt
hms and Blue: colour regulates biological timing’. Abstract: Dawn and du
sk are the key portions of the day when light can reset our internal bio
logical clock. Alongside the pronounced changes in illumnination across
twilight\, the colour of light also varies in a predictable manner. Here
we show that cells within the circadian clock use this change in colour
to estimate sun-position and that this mechanism is essential for appro
priate physiological alignment to the solar cycle.\n\nThe seminar is sch
eduled to take place just prior to FLS Happy Hour to allow discussions a
nd networking to continue after the actual presentation.
