DESCRIPTION:Calling all PhD students! We are delighted to host a visit b
y Sir Alan Wilson of the Alan Turing Institute on 23 October 2018. Sir A
lan will be giving insights into the importance of inter-disciplinary re
search based on his experiences of working in the social and physical sc
iences. \n\nAll are welcome. \n\nAbstract:\nHow many good research idea
s come from being able to trawl across a wide range of reading\, studyin
g and recombining of sources? Quite a lot according to eminent scholar
and geographer \nSir Alan Wilson. Drawing on the experience from his ow
n long career in working across the physical and social sciences he will
explain why researchers of all ages\, but particularly those starting o
ut in their careers\, need to keep in mind the value of inter-disciplina
ry research. Using the idea of ‘combinatorial evolution’ from the work
of Brian Arthur and Ross Ashby’s ‘Design for a brain’ he will show how s
cholarly innovation and discovery often emerges from unexpected sources\
; and building blocks at the basis of many breakthroughs in science come
through venturing into and working with other disciplines. \n
