 ealth: the need for an interdisciplinary approach': \n\nIn 2006\, the In
 stitute of Medicine in the US produced a landmark report highlighting th
 e impact of sleep loss and sleep disorders in society and how this chall
 enge had to be answered by interdisciplinary research and clinical care.
  We established a Centre for Integrated Research and Understanding of Sl
 eep (CIRUS) in 2008 at the University of Sydney and examples of this int
 erdisciplinary approach will be given in 3 disorders – sleep apnea\, ins
 omnia and parasomnias. The public health importance of sleep disorders w
 ill be emphasised as well as the importance of behavioural approaches in
  all these disorders.\n\nSHORT BIOGRAPHY \nRon Grunstein is currently Pr
 ofessor of Sleep Medicine and head of the NHMRC Centre for Integrated Re
 search and Understanding of Sleep (CIRUS) at the Woolcock Institute\, Un
 iversity of Sydney and the NHMRC Australasian Sleep Trials Network. He h
 as been a Practitioner Fellow of the NHMRC since 2002. \n\nProfessor Gru
 nstein is a consultant physician in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at Ro
 yal Prince Alfred Hospital\, Sydney. He was awarded the Nathaniel Kleitm
 an Award of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine in 2011 and the Disti
 nguished Achievement Award of the Australasian Sleep Association in 2010
 . He has Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degrees and a Doctor of Medici
 ne from the University of Sydney and a PhD from the University of Gothen
 burg\, Sweden. \n\nProfessor Grunstein was the President of the World Fe
 deration of Sleep Research and Sleep Medicine Societies (2007-11) that r
 epresents over 12\,000 researchers and sleep clinicians globally and was
  President of the Australasian Sleep Association 1994-1997.\n
