The Hajj is rich with ritual: there are circumambulation, running, throwing of stones, sermonising, and standing, to name just a few. But behind all these stands memory: memory of past actions and speeches undertaken by previous sacred figures, in particular the Prophet Muhammad; memory about the Islamic 'present'; and, perhaps above all, memory of what is to come. The lecture presents the wuquf at 'Arafat as a 'memory' or reminder of that last final 'standing' in judgement before God himself on the Last Day. Actions and sayings from the past are mirrored by actions and sayings in the present which, in turn, look forward in an eschatological manner to the future. Mimesis or imitation is a powerful tool in the deployment of memory.
