DESCRIPTION:The Manchester Institute of Innovation Research runs a series
of regular seminars given by visiting speakers to Manchester\, discussi
ng key issues in science\, technology and innovation policy and manageme
nt.\nThe seminars are normally held at CityLabs on Oxford Road\, and are
open to all with an interest in science\, technology\, and innovation.\
n\nTim Foxon\, SPRU - Energy and Economic Growth: Why we need a new path
way to prosperity\n\nDrawing on the presenter’s recent book\, this prese
ntation reports on insights for a transition to a sustainable low carbon
energy future that can be drawn from a study of the role of energy tech
nologies in historical waves of industrial change. Drawing on evolutiona
ry economics and ecological economics\, this study examines the role tha
t access to new sources of (fossil fuel) energy and economy-wide energy
efficiency improvements have played in these historical waves\, which ha
ve driven surges of economic growth. This has lessons for the scale of c
hanges in technologies\, institutions\, business strategies and user pra
ctices that will be needed for a low carbon energy transition\, and for
recent debates on green growth vs post growth perspectives\, implying th
e need for new economic thinking.\n\nBio\nProf Tim Foxon is Professor of
Sustainability Transitions at SPRU (Science Policy Research Unit)\, Uni
versity of Sussex. His research explores the technological and social fa
ctors relating to the innovation of new energy technologies\, the co-evo
lution of technologies and institutions for a transition to a sustainabl
e low carbon economy\, and relations and interdependencies between energ
y use and economic growth. He is a member of the Centre on Innovation an
d Energy Demand\, the UK Energy Research Centre and of the ESRC Centre f
or Climate Change Economics and Policy. His book on Energy and Economic
Growth: Why we need a new pathway to prosperity has recently been publis
 hed by Routledge.\n\n\n
