 800 million people live within 100 km of an active volcanic system and t
 heir observations provide useful insights on the phenomena\, impacts and
  attendant uncertainty when they erupt. Analysis of community experience
 s have generated details on the dispersal and impacts of volcanic ash\, 
 the initiation of eruptions and the consequences of volcanic uncertainty
 . This talk explores these insights and the research questions they stim
 ulate for scientists working with volcanic and other hazards.
