DESCRIPTION:Individuals who have a diagnosis of schizophrenia can experie
nce both positive and negative symptoms. \n\nPositive symptoms are those
attributes that occur in addition to normal behaviours\, such as voice
hearing and delusions. Negative symptoms are those symptoms that are a d
eficit of an attribute and include\, but are not limited to\, lack of co
ncentration\, loss of motivation\, and emotional and social withdrawal.
\n\nLittle qualitative research has been conducted to date on negative s
ymptoms\, yet these symptoms can be disabling and can affect those aroun
d the individual as well as wider society. \n\nThe aim of this study was
to understand how individuals subjectively experience the prominent neg
ative symptoms of schizophrenia through qualitative semi structured inte
rviews. \n\nThe findings from this unique study are of particular impor
tance to clinicians working with individuals who may experience negative
symptoms of schizophrenia\, as well as to their family members and care
rs. Additionally the findings can aid our understanding as researchers a
nd clinicians of what it is like to experience these symptoms and theref
ore help to improve an individual’s recovery.
