DESCRIPTION:**Unfortunately this seminar has been cancelled.** We apologi
se for the late notice\, but the speaker has become ill and is unable to
travel for the seminar. We are planning to reschedule for the spring se
mester.\n\nAbstract: The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is the UK’s
National Measurement Institute. We are responsible for realising and dis
seminating the seven SI base units\, ensuring that measurements made in
the UK are comparable to measurements the world over. This work underpin
s not only UK trade and quality of life\, but also ensures that fundamen
tal scientifc research is possible: without well-defined units\, measure
ment becomes meaningless and research cannot make progress. We also carr
y out a huge range of research into measurement-related topics\, working
on everything from Earth observation to underwater acoustics\, and from
cancer imaging to autonomous vehicles.\n \nThis talk will describe the
work of the Data Science department at NPL. Our team works with all the
other areas at NPL\, and with external companies and organisations\, to
help people make effective and reliable use (and re-use) of their data.
We use mathematics\, statistics\, and computer science to analyse\, fuse
\, structure\, and store data and to move from data to knowledge. The ta
lk will include a slightly deeper dive into the meaning of digital twins
\, and will outline the challenges to be met if the full benefit of the
 approach is to be achieved.
