“ Ambivalent belonging: Born-again Christians between Africa and Europe”
Questions of belonging are pressing and affective ones in Africa and Europe, entangled as they are with race, religion, and history. Engaging with debates about globalization and autochthony, on one hand, and belonging in Africa and its diasporas, on the other, I consider how born-again Christians in London negotiate belonging between Kenya, their country of origin, and the United Kingdom, their current place of residence. ‘Migrants’ in one context and ‘diasporans’ in another, they are seen as not belonging in either context. I argue that their identification as born-again Christians and claim to membership in a global Christian community offers a morally compelling and emotionally meaningful sense of belonging, which is socially intelligible in Kenya and the United Kingdom. At the same time, although they derive certainty from the belief they are God’s children, they nonetheless contend with contradictions and ambivalence in their lived experiences transnationally.
