Drawing on a number of research projects over the past ten years I intend using the session to think out loud about the growth of consultants as an 'occupational group' and the processes involved in consultancy services regarding 'knowledge exchange'. I use Hood and Jackson's identification of 'consultocracy' to ask questions about the power processes involved in educational policy and change. This is an emerging focus of my ongoing project on knowledge production, where I am interested in who professionals turn to regarding localised policymaking, and what forms of knowledge and ways of knowing are used and regarded as legitimate.
