DESCRIPTION:This seminar is part of CIDRAL's Theory Intensives series.\n\
 nDr Leandro Minuchin (Manchester Architecture Research Centre\, Universi
 ty of Manchester) will lead a seminar on the work of Ernesto Laclau.\n\n
 The articulation of what has been termed the post-neoliberal experiment 
 in Latin America is being challenged by new conservative realignments. I
 n a context where the ‘people’ no longer serves as a suitable category t
 o project alternative political programs\, revisiting and expanding Lacl
 au’s work and - in particular - his theory of articulation\, emerges as 
 an indispensable political task for the emergent political left in the r
 egion and the rest of the world. In this presentation\, I explore how th
 e notion of articulation informs Laclau’s understanding of the political
 . I do this in three steps. I first present a brief conceptual history o
 f the term. I then illustrate how articulation operates in Laclau’s work
  through the inscription of chain of equivalences\, consolidating - hist
 orically contextualised - hegemonic positions. The third step examines t
 he production of false universals and addresses the mechanics of politic
 al action. The paper concludes by signalling theoretical potentials and 
 limitations associated with the notion of articulation in Laclau. I argu
 e for the need to develop a theory of articulation that expands the agen
 cies involved in the articulatory process and multiplies the sites and f
 orms through which articulation takes place.\n\nReadings for this Theory
