The John Rylands Research Institute is proud to present this one-day workshop which connects unique and distinctive maps from the University of Manchester's Special Collections to current research. The event "welcomes members of the academic and research community, representatives from local cultural institutions, and researchers of local history.
Guest speakers will examine the role of maps on a particular theme relating to the City of Manchester and the surrounding area. Cartographic items from the relevant collections will be available for attendees to view during interactive discussion with the speakers and Special Collections staff from the University of Manchester.

Mapping Manchester's urban development
Dr Martin Dodge (Senior Lecturer, School of Environment, Education and Development, University of Manchester)
Professor Brian Robson (Emeritus Professor, School of Environment, Education and Development, University of Manchester)
This presentation will demonstrate the rich holdings of Manchester maps held in the University of Manchester's Special Collections and their value as primary sources for research. The maps date from 1650 to the present day and cover a broad range of themes including housing conditions, industrialisation, changing land use, drinking habits and the impact of canals and railways.
Soviet military maps of Manchester
Dr Alexander Kent (Reader in Cartography and Geographical Information Science Canterbury Christ Church University)
John Davies (independent expert and map collector)
This interactive session describes how maps of Manchester were produced by the Soviet Military during the Cold War and provides an opportunity to collaborate with Alex and John on future research projects.
"Seeking volumes”: developing mixed reality applications with archival collections in the digital spatial humanities
Dr Clancy Wilmott (JRRI Research Fellow and Human Geography Lecturer, School of Environment, Education and Development, University of Manchester)
This presentation will describe Clancy’s current research project which will use cartographic materials from the Library’s Special Collections to focus on volumetric spatial representations of the Oxford Road precinct.
Maps in the collections of learned societies: Manchester Geographical Society Map Cataloguing project

An upcoming cataloguing project funded by the Manchester Geographical Society will be described by Donna Sherman, the Library’s map curator as an example of how the Library can help to make collections more accessible to researchers.
