Title: Størmer's conjecture on arctan identities
A Machin-like formula is a technique for computing the digits of pi with high accuracy, involving linear combinations of rational values of arctan. In 1896, Størmer proved there are only four such identities with two arctan terms, and conjectured there are only finitely many with three terms. Størmer's proof uses basic knowledge of complex numbers and Diophantine equations. In 2018, Yamada announced a partial proof of the three-term case which uses techniques from Diophantine approximation to build on Størmer's proof. In this talk, we will give an overview of the history of this problem and present some future challenges.
