Innovate UK publishes its transparency data on a monthly data, covering each grant the organisation issues. This data has recently been expanded to include CRNs –
the unique identifier which enables analysts to link the dataset to other business data. Dan Hodges is the Head of Economics and Performance at Innovate UK and
shall be talking through how his team have been using this data, including linking to other data sources, and how he sees this data being used in the future to understand and drive impact.
Recent analysis conducted with these data include;
• Building Innovate UK’s new performance reports.
· Linking to the Business Structures Database to look at business performance of grant recipients compared to non-recipients
· Linking to a database of UK equity investment deals to understand how R&D grants fit into the wider landscape
Dan Hodges is the Head of Economics and Performance at Innovate UK. After graduating from an Economics BA at the University of Sussex,
he joined the Government Economic Service, where he has conducted analysis and evaluation on topics including health and safety legislation, space, and employment programmes.
Whilst leading the Innovation Analysis team at the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills he completed a postgraduate economics MSc at Birkbeck College, University of London,
which included a detailed study of the links between innovation and productivity in UK firms. He joined Innovate UK in 2013 where he established our in house economics function.
He now leads the analytical team, covering evaluation, analysis and research.
