DESCRIPTION:Although the topic of ethics has received considerable attent
ion from academics working in Translation and Interpreting Studies\, que
stions about the ‘what’ and the ‘how’ of teaching ethics have received o
nly limited critical attention in the field. This presentation\, based o
n my recent publication\, The Routledge Guide to Teaching Ethics in Tran
slation and Interpreting Education (2024)\, seeks to open up debate abou
t the ways in which educators prepare students to navigate the ethical c
hallenges facing translators and interpreters in the contemporary age\,
and how pedagogical practice can and should evolve to meaningfully respo
nd to the needs of an increasingly diverse student body.\n\nI will discu
ss some of the challenges I encountered in scoping a publication on this
topic before offering some reflections on selected themes\, namely\, th
e relationship between ethics and competence in translation and interpre
ting education\, the potential of different pedagogical theories for dev
eloping ethics education\, and my proposal for an integrated approach. T
he presentation will be of interest to both students and educators in tr
anslation\, interpreting\, intercultural communication and language lear
 ning.\n\n
