DESCRIPTION:Joe Thomas will be speaking at this research seminar\, part o
f the Dynamical Systems and Analysis seminar series. \n\nAbstract: The
local geometry of hyperbolic surfaces has far reaching consequences on t
he spectral properties of the Laplacian operator in this setting. By ela
borating on this connection\, I will motivate some recent joint work wit
h Laura Monk (Strasbourg)\, in which we introduce the notion of a tangle
-free parameter for these surfaces. The highlight of this work is that t
he structure of geodesics and their local topology can be well understoo
d when their lengths are on scales up to this parameter. I will discuss
some of these implications as well as how one can show that typical surf
aces are clog(genus)-tangle-free for any 0
