Schubert Quartettsatz
Brahms String Quartet in A minor, Op. 51 No. 2
Taneyev Piano Quintet in G with David Fanning (piano)
Sergey Taneyev’s 1912 Piano Quintet is a monument of the Russian repertoire: in effect the piano-chamber masterpiece that neither his teacher Tchaikovsky nor his pupil Rachmaninov managed to write. It combines their emotionalism with the intellectual rigour of Brahms and ends with the most tintinnabulating conclusion in the entire repertoire. And as a foil, the turbulent centrepiece of Brahms’s quartet trilogy, with the stormiest of Schubert to set the scene.
NB: this concert will be preceded at 18.00 by a live BBC ‘Discovering Music’ recording, in which Taneyev’s Piano Quintet will be analysed and discussed by Stephen Johnson with David Fanning and the Quatuor Danel
