DESCRIPTION:A public lecture by Mary Kate McGowan and a 2-day workshop se
eking to establish the necessary ingredients for a logic of transformati
ve social change. This event is kindly funded by Royal Institute of Phil
osophy\, SoSS Networking Grant (UOM)\, Centre for Digital Trust and Soci
ety (CDTS at UOM) and The University of Manchester Philosophy Department
.\n\n\n\nEVENT THEMES\n\nOppressive social structures have powerful iner
tia that goes beyond individual agents with bad attitudes. They shape in
 centives\, roles\, power\, hierarchies\, norms\, ideologies\, resources\
, institutions. Speech is used to maintain and expand oppression\, harmi
ng vulnerable groups and normalizing hatred and violence against them. H
ow to disrupt this cycle?\n\nWe seek to establish necessary ingredients
for a logic of transformative social change. A body of work proposes tha
 t social-norm change can be explained through decision-making theories\,
complexity theories\, game-theoretic models. We aim to establish fruitf
ul links across these models to answer these problems:\n\n· why do indiv
iduals follow bad norms\;\n\n· how does language provide such incentives
\;\n\n· how to mitigate conditions leading to unfair distribution of res
ources\;\n\n· what forms of resistance and social movements enable socia
 l change.\n\n\nSCHEDULE\n\n4TH OF JULY: DAY 1\n\n12:30-12:45 REGISTRATIO
