DESCRIPTION:The Global Development Institute is pleased to present Profes
 sor Genevieve Le Baron speaking on the business of forced labour in glob
 al agricultural supply chains.\n\nThis lecture will present findings fro
 m the ESRC-funded Global Business of Forced Labour project\, which inves
 tigates the business of forced labour in global agricultural production\
 , focusing on tea and cocoa supply chains feeding UK markets. It will ad
 dress the following key questions:\n• What factors create business ‘dema
 nd’ for forced labour within global supply chains?\n• What kinds of busi
 nesses use forced labour and labour exploitation\, and how do they make 
 money from it?\n• How effective are corporate social responsibility init
 iatives (including ‘ethical’ certification) and anti-slavery laws in com
 bating the business of forced labour?\n• What will it take to end the bu
 siness of forced labour in global cocoa and tea supply chains?\n\nThe st
 udy has generated an original dataset through research with tea and coco
 a workers in India and Ghana\, and interviews with domestic and internat
 ional business actors\, international organizations\, governments\, and 
 other actors. The findings provide new and important evidence for govern
 ment\, industry\, and civil society actors on the causes of\, and soluti
 ons to\, forced labour in global commodity production.\nThe Global Devel
 opment Lecture Series brings experts involved in global development to T
 he University of Manchester. It aims to facilitate dialogue and discussi
 on\, providing a space for leading development thinkers to share their l
 atest research and ideas. Lectures are followed by an audience Q&A. All
