DESCRIPTION:Alan Turing biography: talk by Sir Dermot Turing\, 2pm – 4pm
Room G205 \nAlan Turing Building. 52nd December 2015\n\nSir Dermot Turin
g\, a nephew of Alan Turing\, has released a new biography.\n\n Alan Tur
ing was an extraordinary man who crammed into a life of only\n 42 years
the careers of mathematician\, codebreaker\, computer scientist \n and b
iologist. He is widely regarded as a war hero for his \n codebreaking wo
rk at Bletchley Park\, and considered to be the father \n of theoretical
computer science and artificial intelligence\, as well \n as a pioneer
of developmental biology. He spent the last 5 years of \n his life worki
ng at the University of Manchester\, where he produced \n some of his mo
st creative\, but still little-known\, ideas.\n\nTuring's conviction for
gross indecency in 1952\, followed two years \n later by his untimely d
eath\, brought a terrible end to a life packed \n with achievement. In t
hat context it has been hard to discover the \n real man behind the stor
y.\n\n At this event Sir Dermot Turing – Alan Turing’s nephew and author
of a \n new biography on his uncle - will share personal insights\, fam
ily \n stories and research from his book including interviews with Alan
\nTuring’s contemporaries\, unseen photos and material not available to
\n previous researchers. He will focus on Alan Turing’s Manchester year
s \nand the life-long influence which Max Newman\, head of his Departmen
t \n at the University\, had on Alan Turing’s thinking and achievements.
\n\n There will be tea and cake after the event and a chance to discuss
the \n talk more informally with Sir Dermot.\n\n This will be a public e
vent but registration is available to members \n of the Schools of CS an
d Mathematics until 23^rd November\, when it \n will be advertised exter
nally.\n\n Registration is essential: \n *http://alan-turing-decoded.eve
