DESCRIPTION:This event is part of CIDRAL's Spring 2019 programme\, 'Work\
, Leisure\, Culture'.\n\nPat Devine (University of Manchester) will lead
a key ideas seminar on the work of Karl Polanyi.\n\nThe economic histor
ian\, Karl Polanyi (1886-1964)\, wrote powerfully against neoliberal thi
nkers – primarily Friedrich Hayek - in his book\, The Great Transformati
on (1944). Indeed\, his thesis that the self-regulating market (capitali
sm) is destructive of human and non-human nature has become increasingly
important in the neoliberal period\, influencing contemporary figures s
uch as David Harvey. In this seminar\, I shall give a brief summary of h
is life\, and an account of his central thesis\, pointing out ambiguitie
s and blind spots in his argument\, before going on to outline controver
sies over different interpretations of his concept of the 'double moveme
nt'. I shall also attempt to link all this to CIDRAL's theme of work\, l
 eisure\, culture.\n\nThere is a preparatory reading available at https:/
