The Fractal Structure of Social Networks
Human egocentric social networks have a limiting size (around 150 alters) and a very distinctive fractal structure into layers with a natural scaling ratio of ~3 that, even more remarkably, is also found in the social groups of monkeys and apes. These layers are created by the frequency of interaction with different alters, and have been found in face-to-face interactions, the pattern of phone calling as well as in social media postings. I shall explore the reasons why these patterns occur, and the cognitive and other constraints that underlie them.
