DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nSocial Anthropology Seminar\nMonday\, 25th September 20
17\n\nDr Stef Jansen - The University Of Manchester\n\n(Non-)Events: ant
hropological (in)fidelities to Alain Badiou\n\nThis presentation constru
cts a dialogue between Alain Badiou's philosophy of the event and the de
mands of and opportunities offered by social scientific analysis of chan
ge and reproduction. Reflecting on the (after)life of one happening in B
osnia and Herzegovina (the 2014 Winter Revolt) in light of another happe
ning (the 1992–1995 war)\, I investigate the conditions under which happ
enings may or may not come to function—and be recognised—as catalysts of
change. Substantially departing from Badiou's normative-universalist ap
proach\, I nevertheless seek to demonstrate how a core dimension of his
project—an effort to address events processually in relation to subject
formation—can inspire the formulation of interesting avenues for anthrop
ological investigation. Particularly\, addressing questions of perspecti
ve\, intensity and duration\, I contend that anthropologists are well-pl
aced to trace what Badiou calls 'fidelity'. Alert to different modalitie
 s of fidelity\, I counter-intuitively suggest that we mobilise Badiou's
event theory to analyse non-events too. \n\n\nSecond Floor Boardroom 2.
