Dr Wendy Thompson – ‘Dental antibiotic stewardship - Like pulling teeth’
Abstract
Antibiotics don't cure toothache. Guidelines for treating acute dental problems are for dental procedures not prescriptions. Yet around 80% of antibiotics prescribed by dentists are inappropriate. Wendy's PhD was about reducing antibiotic use for adults with acute dental conditions, using an ethnographic approach to understand dentist- and patient-factors influencing treatment decisions, behavioural science to underpin intervention design, and coproduction to develop evidence-based antibiotic stewardship interventions.
Wendy joined University of Manchester as an NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Primary Dental Care in March, having completed her NIHR doctoral research fellowship at University of Leeds last year. She is also the lead author of the FDI World Dental Federation's white paper on antibiotics and dentistry and a Council member of the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy. During this CPC&HSR seminar, Wendy will share the findings of her doctoral research and talk about her plans for her postdoctoral research about improving the quality of urgent dental care by encouraging procedures not prescriptions.
