DESCRIPTION:The next Centre for Biostatistics Seminar talk will take plac
 e on 10 September\, with speaker\, Calvin Heal.\n \nAbstract: \n\nIntrac
 erebral haemorrhage (ICH)\, bleeding within the brain tissue\, is a part
 icularly harmful form of stroke. The size of the bleed (haematoma) and h
 ow quickly it subsequently clears determines how much surrounding tissue
  is damaged and the patient’s functional outcome. Experimental evidence 
 suggests that the immune system facilitates this haematoma clearance.\n 
 \nIn our dataset\, 274 patients with ICH had numerous CT scans up to and
  beyond day 30\, whereby most patients haematomas had largely resolved. 
 We aimed to determine whether any patient characteristics were associate
 d with the rate of resolution. Determining the rate of resolution is com
 plicated by the concurrence of two processes following stroke onset: exp
 ansion of the haematoma for the first couple of days after and the immun
 e systems continuous hypothesised attempts to clear the haematoma.  The 
 overlapping physiological processes and variability in number of CT scan
 s available for each patient made for an interesting challenge in modell
 ing the data. Our various approaches are outlined before we explain how 
 enlisting the help of a department more familiar with pharmacokinetic mo
 delling problems helped us reach our conclusions.\n\n\n
