Join us for the latest in the history external speaker seminar series. Strike leader Pravin Parmar, known to his friends as the ‘Che Guevara of Bolton’, stands with his arm raised, a homemade picket band wrapped around his jacket. It is June 1978 and the Asian workers have walked out of the Bulmer and Lumb mill. For five weeks they strike. ‘Bolton’s Grunwick’, as one radical report put it at the time before the strike, rapidly faded into obscurity. This talk recovers this struggle, situating it within a longer history of Black and Asian workers in Britain.
