DESCRIPTION:Elena Luca (UC San Diego) joins us for the Physical Applied M
athematics Series. This seminar is unusually scheduled for Thursday 5th
December. The seminar will be in Frank Adams 1 at 2pm\, with tea and bis
cuits as usual.\n\nAbstract:\n\nIn this talk\, we present fast and accur
ate numerical methods for the solution of mixed boundary value problems
and of the associated matrix Wiener–Hopf problems. The Wiener–Hopf probl
ems are formulated as Riemann–Hilbert problems on the real line\, and th
e numerical approach for such problems of Trogdon & Olver (2015) is empl
oyed. It is shown that the known far-field behaviour of the solutions ca
n be exploited to construct tailor-made numerical schemes providing accu
rate results. A number of scalar and matrix Wiener–Hopf problems that ge
neralize the classical Sommerfeld problem of diffraction of plane waves
by a semi-infinite plane\, as well as problems arising in homogenization
theory\, are solved using the new approach.
