DESCRIPTION:Part of the CTIS Research Seminar Series. All welcome\, no re
gistration necessary. \n\nAbstract: This presentation focuses on film re
makes as a form of translation. Remakes have often been ignored by trans
lation theory in favour of more common modalities of audiovisual transla
tion such as subtitling and dubbing. From a semiotic perspective\, both
translations and translingual remakes offer a similar replacement of sou
rce language signs with target language signs. Remakes offer a fully mul
timodal experience of film translation. This presentation will focus fir
st on historical remakes\, especially the multilanguage films of the ear
ly sound film period (1929-1933)\, when studios experimented with multip
le means of film translation. It then discusses remakes in America\, foc
using on the tension between perception of American remakes as a form of
cultural exploitation and the artistic practices involved in film remak
ing\, before moving onto remakes from around the world. Here\, again\, t
here is a tension between the expansion of American culture and its loca
l negotiations. Finally\, the presentation will discuss the theoretical
issues brought up by remakes\, such as the conflict between audience per
ception and legal frameworks\, the concept of hauntology in remakes\, an
d the complex economic\, political and industrial frameworks that remake
s are situated in. Throughout\, the presentation will be illustrated wit
 h examples and film clips.
