DESCRIPTION:Seeing the Invisible: Observing the Dark Side of the Universe
… and the Earth.\nProfessor Sarah Bridle\n\nIt seems that most of the un
iverse is made up of mysterious ingredients which we cannot see directly
. While\, these ‘dark’ components of the universe do not emit or absorb
light\, they do exert a gravitational attraction\, and ‘gravitational l
ensing’ is one of the most promising methods for finding out more about
them.\n\nIn her Lovell lecture\, Professor Sarah Bridle will describe gr
avitational lensing\, the bending of light by gravity\, which is predict
ed by Einstein’s General Relativity. She will also discuss the latest re
sults from the Dark Energy Survey\, which is observing shapes and approx
imate distances to 300 million galaxies over one eight of the entire sky
.\n\nProfessor Sarah Bridle obtained her PhD from the University of Camb
ridge in 2000 and was made full Professor at the University of Mancheste
r in 2013\, after research in France\, Cambridge and London.\n\nShe has
received prestigious awards in the UK and Europe including a Royal Socie
ty University Research Fellowship\, the Royal Astronomical Society’s Fow
ler Award and in the past year\, she finished a European Research Counci
l Starting Grant and started an ERC Consolidator Grant. She is author of
over 70 refereed publications which have over 3500 citations.\n
