DESCRIPTION:Academic research and societal impact are increasingly mentio
ned in the same breath. Regularly as an opportunity\, but even more ofte
n as a challenge. With my doctoral thesis I aim to contribute to the imp
rovement of societal impact practices. In this presentation I will first
briefly discuss the relevant Dutch science policy context. Then I will
introduce the studies that are underlying to my thesis. I have studied s
ocietal impact in different fields: social sciences\, humanities\, compu
ter sciences\, engineering sciences\, climate science\, physics and chem
istry. The core of the presentation are the findings from these studies.
They suggest 1) societal impact should not be thought of as a one dimen
sional\; different aims demand different strategies\, 2) societal impact
can best be evaluated in terms of contributions to achieving these aims
and 3) there is a misalignment between formal and informal institutions
concerning societal impact. I will conclude with exploring implications
  for science policy. \n\n
