Dr Rupert Cox (Senior Lecture, Social Anthropology, University of Manchester)
Rupert will present a recently completed 50-minute film (funded by a Toyota arts award) about the acoustic ecology of the island of Okinawa, Japan. The film deals with the sonic presence of the military bases as they impact on the memories of the Pacific war and post-war. The film is the latest attempt in a series of films, sound recordings and art-books to use images and text to convey the impression and significances of sound as part of a sense of place. Among other things it deals with issues of objects (planes), materiality (the environment) and agency (sensory perception and social relations). The film will be followed by a discussion of related readings, available in advance by contacting roddy.hawkins@manchester.ac.uk
The Sonic Cultures Research Group holds monthly meetings (Wednesdays, 4pm - 6pm) during both semesters, held alternately at the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University. Dates in 2017/18 are as follows: 11 Oct; 8 Nov; 13 Dec; 10 Jan; 14 Feb; 14 Mar; 9 May; 13 June.
