In this conversation, Vikki McCall (University of Stirling) will present some first insights from the Intersectional Stigma of Place-Based Ageing (ISPA) Project on how stigma can lead to exclusion, negative experiences, and increased barriers to services and explore how housing services can tackle this by integrating inclusivity and accessibility. The project is an ambitious, 5-year participatory mixed methods study exploring how stigma attached to where people live intersects with disability and ageing experiences.
Findings from an initial evidence review, Mass Observation database diaries secondary analysis, and new primary data from community-peer-researchers will be outlined, providing insights into the lived realities of disabled adults with sensory and mobility impairments and identifying how age-, disability-, and place-related stigmas converge to produce additional barriers to inclusive living. We will explore how these insights can empower our understanding of practical place-based housing solutions to tackle intersectional stigma and inequality via accessible homes and communities.
The project, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (running Sep 2022–Sep 2027), is a collaboration between the University of Stirling, University of St Andrews, Newcastle University, and University of Bristol, partnered with the Housing Learning and Improvement Network (Housing LIN) and Scottish Federation of Housing Associations (SFHA).
