ed the western basin of the Mississippi river to its imperial domains in
the Americas. For four decades\, Spanish officials imposed various colo
nial reforms over the former French colonial system. While doing so\, th
ey commensurated and emulated political practices from other empires and
indigenous polities. Their memorias and relaciones (i.e. reports) stres
s the role of performing sameness and difference towards the French colo
nial regime\, indigenous populations like the Comanche\, and English ene
mies. This paper analyses the discourses and practices of Spanish royal
officials\, aiming to unveil the role of mimesis in the late eighteenth-
century colonization of the Mississippi river. \n
