DESCRIPTION:Dr Elizabeth Surrey\, Technology Programme Leader at Culham C
entre for Fusion Technology\, presented on progress in fusion reactor de
sign at the first University of Manchester at Harwell colloquium.\n\nOve
r the past five years international programmes have increasingly directe
d effort towards the engineering and technology of fusion reactors\, in
particular the ‘demonstrator’. \n\nThe EU programme has been at the fore
front of this movement with the Power Plant Physics and Technology progr
amme exploring the design space of an integrated machine\, DEMO. UKAEA i
s a leading contributor to this programme\, providing approximately 30%
of the programme effort in areas from plasma physics and high heat flux
engineering to electricity generation and economics. By considering the
fusion plant as an integration of many systems\, the colloquium will re
view the new challenges in fundamental physics and engineering and\, as
is now becoming clearer\, in manufacturing\, maintenance and decommissio
ning – the "industrialisation" of fusion - and will discuss the roles of
advanced materials and manufacturing and an increasing need for digital
and data driven engineering.\n\nEvent schedule\n\n- 15:00-15:40: Dr Eli
zabeth Surrey ‘Progress in Fusion Reactor Design’\n\n- 15:40-15:50: Ques
