Join in this EEE open seminar from the department's new academics.

Bringing massive objects into the quantum regime offers exciting new opportunities for the development of quantum technology and exploring the limits of modern physics. Levitodynamics — the trapping and control of nano- and micro-resonators in vacuum — has established itself as a promising research field that seeks to achieve these goals. When compared with other platforms, two features stand out: (i) the large mass and density (and hence complexity) of the levitated object, as compared to atomic systems; (ii) the high degree of control over the dynamics and coupling to the environment, as compared to clamped mechanical resonators. The combination of these two features provides a unique platform for applied and fundamental research, from the development of mechanical quantum sensors to reconciling gravity with quantum mechanics. In this talk, after introducing the audience to the field of levitodynamics, I will describe how we combine achievements in atomic physics, control theory and photonics, to precisely control the mechanics of nano-scale resonators and engineer quantum states of motion. Throughout the talk, I will attempt to make connections to different parts of the EEE department at Manchester, with the goal of creating synergy.

Dr Jayadev Vijayan

Biography: Jayadev completed his PhD in 2020 at the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Munich, where he developed an ultracold-atom quantum simulator to explore unsolved problems in materials science. He then joined the Photonics Lab at ETH Zurich to probe quantum effects arising in levitated optomechanical systems and harness them for quantum sensing. He is currently a DKO fellow at the University of Manchester Hope you will attend and enjoy it!
