DESCRIPTION:'The inter-disciplinary design studio: social choice and mean
ing in the creative process' Sian Joel-Edgar\, University of Exeter Busi
ness School\n\nIn the context of design as a social construction\, my pr
esentation will focus upon the articulation and observation of social ch
oices that designers make in the artistic reflective process of three in
ter-disciplinary design studios in Scotland. \n\nI will discuss the eth
nographic network analysis approach that was used and the practicalities
of its application to two undergraduate design studios and a profession
al practice. \n\nI will also present the themes that emerged from the et
hnographic field research: the importance and role of the artefact in th
e social network of the studio\, the layers of meaning to the persons wh
o were sought for creative advice and the evolution of the network as de
sign needs changed. \n\nFinally I will talk about aspects of the resear
ch that I would like to move forward: consequences and reactions to bein
g presented with your own ego-nets\, the entrepreneurial artisan and how
  creative networks compare.\n
