DESCRIPTION:That transfers of older people from one institution to anothe
r is detrimental to well-being health and survival has been reported for
50 years. This has led to fear\, anger and legal challenges when closu
res occur. reviews have identified accounts of relocation followed by a
dverse outcomes and others where problems were avoided or benefits claim
ed. The last twelve years of literature on health outcomes following in
voluntary relaction between nursing homes add little that is new to our
understanding of the issues. Reports of post-move mortality\, physical
or psychological health confirm that relaction without preparation carri
ed higher risk of poor outcomes than moves which are orderly and include
preparation. The literature on the care home closure process\, admissi
ons and ndividual tranfers offers insights into practices that might hel
p minimise adverse outcomes. A number of agencies have produced helpful
guidelines. How these are implemented needs to be monitored and linked
to in-depth studies of sample closures. If you wish to attend this sem
 inar please register with christine.brand@manchester.ac.uk\n
